Pep You Up Peppermint Coffee Scrub

This simple and healthy body scrub will not only remove dead skin but will also create a natural barrier between your skin and a razor. You get caffeinated by coffee, invigorated by peppermint and protected by natural oils….does it get any better than that?  Well, maybe! Coffee exfoliation is said to help stimulate blood circulation and reduce the appearance of cellulite. Whether or not that is true I don’t know.  What I do know is after using this scrub my skin looks and feels better than it did going into the shower and my razor burn no longer exists after one weeks use!

Peppermint Coffee Body Scrub

OPTIONAL– Add .3-1% Phenonip preservative added to oil phase. Take the total weight of the recipe(12.5 oz.) and multiply by the % you want to use to get the total amount of preservative that should be added to the batch. This protects the product from microbial growth when it comes into contact with water. However, it is NOT necessary as it is recommended to keep your main supply of scrub in a cool dark place and simply scoop some out into a separate container when you bathe or keep a smaller container of the scrub in your shower and refill when needed.

Instructions

NOTE: We need to make sure we have coffee infused jojoba oil for this recipe. You can either cold infuse naturally in a jar weeks prior or you can follow the below method of what I call “instant infusion” which we do over heat. I do believe this “instant or quick” method will NOT yield as nutritional of an oil as cold infusing would, but in the end we still get the coffee infused oil.  So, the choice of method is up to you 😉 

  1. If you are cold infusing the oil skip this step and move onto step 2. Otherwise, measure out 1.5 cups of organic coffee. Put the coffee in a ziplock bag and crush by hand with a rolling pin. We want the coffee beans to be broken up but not completely ground.  (See video for visual ⬇️ )
  2. Measure out 1.5 cups unrefined Jojoba oil and pour into double boiler or heat resistant bowl which will be placed over a pan filled 1/4 of the way with water during the infusion process.
  3. Pour your crushed coffee beans into the oil and heat over medium low setting on stovetop for 40 minutes to 1 hour stirring occasionally.
  4. Once the infusing time has passed remove the oil and coffee from heat and pour through a fine mesh strainer into a new bowl. 
  5. Fully strain the oil out by stirring and pressing the beans around the strainer. 
  6. Put the coffee beans aside and pour the oil you have into a coffee filter and gently work the oil through the filter for your final strain. Set aside
  7. On a scale measure out 5 oz of coffee **This will include your leftover beans from infusing plus any additional it takes to equal 5 oz
  8. Place your 5 oz of coffee into a food processor and process on high for one minute. Stop and scrape down the grinds.
  9. Weigh out 2 ounces of coffee infused oil on scale and add to food processor
  10. Process coffee and oil together on high for another 2-3 minutes and stop
  11. Pour your coffee mixture into a medium bowl
  12. Add 15 drops pure peppermint essential oil
  13. Add 1/4 cup fractionated coconut oil and stir
  14. Add 1/2 cup raw cane sugar
  15. Stir and incorporate all ingredients
  16. Pour into containers of choice. I like to use these click here for metal containers or click here for glass containers.

 

Notes

  • If you plan on leaving this in the shower keep in mind that there are no added preservatives in this scrub (unless you decide to add one yourself). I have had mine for about 3 months and it is still fine. However, I always like to advise to keep an eye on your natural products seeing as the introduction of water can decrease the shelf life. I recommend keeping a small container in the shower and filling it up with more once you run out. You can store the excess in a cool dry area or gift it out to others. Shelf life if uncontaminated and left with the lid on is 6-8 months. 
  • By infusing the oil first, rather than just processing the oil and coffee from the get-go, we can infuse more nutrients from the coffee into the oil. Seeing as the oil is what nourishes and stays on our skin the longest, I like to ensure that the oil has as much of a nutrient rich content as possible. 
  • Never use coffee scrubs on your face. Even though this coffee is ground down significantly from the food processor (which is more than most recipes call for) I still think coffee is too harsh for our delicate faces. Believe it or not the coffee grinds cause micro tears in the skin resulting in more harm than good.   • Razor burn- I have always struggled with razor burn especially under my arms but this scrub has turned my pits around….that sounded weird 🤨  Well, it has made a major change for me! The oils create a silky barrier between your skin and the razor blade which eliminates the blade scraping your sensitive skin. It is game changing. As always, don’t be hard with your razor. Be gentle! Try it out and see for yourselves! The cooling peppermint is an added bonus too! ♥️ 
  • In case you were wondering, we strain through a coffee filter because we are not going to use all of the coffee infused oil that we made in this recipe. So, you can save what is leftover and use it in another recipe! Straining through the filter is just something I do so my leftover oil is ready to go when the time comes.
